Shorty opened my door and patted Zydeco’s smooth brown head, then headed toward the kitchen. “Before we go t’see Miss Eula Mae, I wanted t’ give Zy somethin.”

My dog hadn’t moved from Shorty’s side. At the mention of his name, he barked.

“Hey there, buddy! If yer mama says so, I’ve got some snacks for ya’.”

He bent down to pet Zy again, and got a lick in the face. “Hey, now! Only my girlfriend does that. Ya’ don’t wanna make her jealous.”

“Yeah, I don’t think that’s an issue. What’d you bring my dog?”

Shorty held out a brown paper bag. ‘Member my cousin Cletus? He made some horse treats called Nicker Doodles. Sold ‘em to a big pet food man-you-fact-sher-er and made some good money. Now he’s got these dog treats. Iffen Zy likes ‘em, Cletus might jus’ put his face on the bag. Now Doc, before ya’ get all mad, I called up Dr. Trahan an’ read ‘im the in-gree-dee-unts. The good dock-ter said Zy can have ‘em. So whatcha think? We can use ‘em t’teach Zy some more tricks.”

Thanks to Shorty, Zydeco had mastered sit, stay, come, and heel. What had I taught my dog? When I went to the kitchen, he could eat the food on the floor faster than I could pick it up.

“That sounds great, Shorty. Would you like to give him a couple before we leave?”

“Sure Doc. Hey, Zy! Want some Off the Chain Chewies?”

Cletus might have a career in marketing…pet treats at least.

Zydeco waited for Shorty to place each treat in his palm, then stuck his tongue out to touch it. Zip! The treat disappeared into Zy’s mouth and he licked his lips. Had he learned the lip licking from my PI? I didn’t remember that habit before Shorty started training him.

As a child, Shorty never had a pet. His parents had enough to do with taking care of the farm and six kids. “We got enough mouths t’feed! If ya’ have enough time t’play with an animal, go out tuh the barn an’ pet a hog. An’ while yer out there, make sure they all got fed.”

In many ways Shorty considered Zydeco his pet. “Hey Doc, Zy really likes ‘em! Mind if I take a pick-sher o’ Zy an’ send it tuh Cletus? Yeah, I think Zy’s face would look real good on a bag o’ Off the Chain Chewies.”

“Sure. Maybe he’ll earn some royalties off this gig. Goodness knows he should be earning his keep.”

Shorty pulled out his five-year-old flip phone. The user had to memorize the keypad to make any calls, because the numbers had rubbed off years ago. Texting was impossible without a keyboard, which suited my PI just fine. “Too much teck-noll-uh-gee these days! If I wanna talk tuh somebody I’ll just call ‘im up. Why should I spend all that time clickin’ and clackin’ on my phone? Nah, I jus’ punch in a number and hit one button. Jus’ one button!”

To keep the peace, I didn’t argue that the phone number was another ten buttons.
